An expedition to the Carnarvon range

Long time members of Mudgee Rotary, Ian and Maxine Morgan were speakers at the club’s special weekly meeting: Partners’ night on Tuesday 14 July. On this occasion, Ian and Maxine shared their experience on a recent caravan trip to the Carnarvon range, in Central Queensland.

The trip with their new caravan, an Elite Goulburn Off-Roader, began in Mudgee and they visited 14 places in total, from Narrabri, Taroom, Barcaldine, Longreach and a number of National parks, to name just a few. The approximately 4000 km journey was nostalgia for Ian, as he reminisced previous caravaning in his childhood with his parents and sisters.

The journey highlights some fascinating places, panorama and folklore about a number of towns and places. For example:

  • The spy glass mountain in Salvator Rosa section of the National Park, a naturally eroded sandstone cliff with a hole through it.
  • Sandstone mountains, similar to those near Rylstone, with Aborigional Art
  • 13Klm bush walk in Carnarvon Gorge
  • Pubs, The Glengarry Hilton, west of Lightening Ridge, the kitchen and bistro is a shipping container!
  • Longreach, the birth place of Qantas , The Stockmans Hall Of Fame and The School of the Air
  • Lightening Ridge, full of Opal mines

We’d like to thank Ian and Maxine for the presentation and an enjoyable night.
