In 2017 three primary schools in Mudgee indicated a need for additional home reading material to support the engagement of parents/carers in their children’s learning.

It was explained to us that parents play a critical role in providing learning opportunities at home and in linking what children learn at school with what happens in a wider context. By participating in learning interactions and activities outside the school, parents become important models in children’s learning. Recent research indicates that parent engagement has a 40% to 60% influence on student achievement.

The three schools submitted a proposal to our Club for the purchase of supplementary book’s for student home reading to be funded over a three year period. This proposal was accepted by the Rotary Club of Mudgee and the programme, now in its third year, has been successful in achieving the originally agreed objective in all schools.

The final donations were recently made to all three schools.
