The Mudgee Mathematical Minds Challenge is Back

Fifty two students from eight regional schools gathered on Tuesday 24 October at St, Matthews Catholic School to compete in the  annual Mathematic Minds Maths Challenge following two years of cancelled events. Unfortunately Wellington High and Lue and Hargraves Public Schools were not able to attend on the day due to the flooding..

With prizes of $750 $500 and $250 available for winning schools  in the three Stages ranging from Years 5 and Six Primary to Years 9 and 10 in Secondary, competition was  again intense. A range of activities which required various maths skills both individually and as teams meant that the students were engaged and also reported that it was “good fun”.

Winning schools in each stage were Stage 3 : Mudgee Public, Gulgong Public and St Matthews Catholic , in Stages 4: Mudgee High, St Johns College (Dubbo) and St Matthews Catholic and 5: St. Johns School(Dubbo), Mudgee High and St Matthews Catholic.

Prizes were generously donated by Peabody Energy, Yancoal Moolarben, P&A Engineering and Brindley’s Chartered Accountants. The event was organised by the Rotary Club of Mudgee and the Mathematics Staff at St. Matthews with a BBQ funded by the Mudgee Sunrise Rotary Club and capably cooked by St. Matts students.

President of the Rotary Club of Mudgee, Rhys Kable,  said ” It is great to see the Mathematical Minds Challenge up and running again for 2022. Recognition of our best budding mathemeticians is important and it is great to see the teamwork in this event by the students”
