The Rotary Club of Mudgee commenced coordinating this project in 2020 as a major initiative to recognise the achievements of this remarkable women by coordinating funding and donations for a project for a statue in the town of Mudgee for the broader Mid-Western Region. The ‘seed’ for this project occurred when Club Member, Chris Stephens read an article by Emerita Professor Lesley Hughes about Louisa Lawson’s life and the lack of recognition for her and the mention that she was raised and lived a significant portion of her life in and near Mudgee. The Club then decided to assist backing this project to achieve recognition for this remarkable woman and provide a fitting, long term way of doing so that would also nenefit Mudgee and tourism in the region.
The necessary funding target was achieved in 2022 and on March 8 on 2023 International Women’s Day, the magnificent bronze statue was unveiled in front of Mudgee Library in Market St, Mudgee and officially handed over from the Rotary Club of Mudgee to the Mid-Western Council.
